October 6th, 2014: Clinical Training Group: The Use of Language in Counseling

Two hour group training discussion with 14 graduate clinical trainees on how the use of language and terms influences the relationship with the client.  Attention must be given to whether the words used with a client creates a close or distant relationship. Often clinical words, if not matched to the client’s way of understanding the problem, can create a poor rapport. Tips and advice was given on how to match clinical language to the client’s theory of change.

September 29th, 2014: Google+ Counselor Training Group: Learning New Internet Connection Tools to Help Clients Achieve Goals

A two hour group of 10 practitioners in training held on Google+, exploring how to use technology to help others better their lives and reach life goals. We discussed the technology behind Google+, tested video features and talked about ways in which counselors can represent the needs of their clients and themselves in an agency setting.

September 22nd, 2014: Clinical Training Group: How to be Helpful to Clients and Respectful to Their Relationships

Two hour clinical graduate training group discussing about how counselors can help individual clients while being respectful of their relationships. Particular attention was given to ways in which counselors can facilitate client relationship development without intervening to the point that they get in between family dynamics.  Ethics were discussed as well as reporting laws and confidentiality.

September 16th, 2014: Clinical Training: Group Work and Group Skills

Three hour training given to graduate clinical students about the difference between psychoeducational and process groups as well as skill to facilitate these groups. Specific skills include redirecting messages, softening overpowering messages, reaching for feelings link, and addressing meta-messages. Attention was given to horizontal questions vs vertical questions in group and the creation of group safety and cohesion.

September 9th, 2014: Clinical Lab: How to Write Clinical Notes

One hour presentation to graduate counselor trainees about how to write a clinical note that will pass medicaid and third party insurance audits. Specifically, all noted should always have such things as start time and stop time, who was present, what goals were addressed, which clinical approaches were used, an included quote from the primary billable clients, a suicide/homicide screen, as well as other areas of importance.
